Use a padded bag to protect your skis, board or poles. A double bag provides you with extra room for more gear or clothes.
Keep your riding boots with you as carry-on. Most airlines will let your take boots in a boot bag or backpack. In addition, many still allow a second personal item such as a personal computer.
It is much easier to keep track of your ski equipment or luggage if you try to book non-stop flights to your destination.
Although an airline usually allows one ski/snowboard bag per passenger, you may remove the bindings and place them in other bags to allow you to carry more than one set in a bag at no extra charge or weight penalty. Spreading the weight among your bags and your travel partner’s bags, will allow you to take more necessary items.
Consider renting vehicles with all or 4WD when driving in snow country. Using chains on a rental car may cause you to incur extra charges. Many rental agencies no longer offer chains as part of a standard winter rental. Get these vehicles early as they are usually of limited supply.
Tie matching ribbons or cords to the handles of your luggage to help you spot your items when picking them up.
